The Hills Have Eyes 2 [DVD] [2007]

The Hills Have Eyes 2 [DVD] [2007]

Editorial Reviews

Synopsis
After a group of hapless National Guard troops fails a training exercise, their commanding officer (Flex Alexander, SNAKES ON A PLANE) orders them to deliver supplies to some scientists in Yuma Flats, New Mexico. The mutants from the first film (the unfortunate victims who live on nuclear testing ground) have returned to terrorise a group of Department of Defence researchers. The unlucky soldiers happen upon the remains of their camp (and its denizens), and the horrors begin. The inbred family of cannibals stalks the soldiers and picks them off, one by one, in gruesome fashion. Alejandre Aja (HIGH TENSION) directed the 2006 remake, but this sequel replaces Aja with Martin Weisz, whose first feature, ROHTENBERG, was banned in his native Germany. Written by genre master Wes Craven and his son Jonathan, THE HILLS HAVE EYES 2 is a sequel to the remake of Craven’s original 1977 film. It’s no coincidence that Craven changed this sequel’s victims from a band of motorcyclists to a group of unlucky soldiers, giving the film political undertones. For a brief moment, this film addresses the idea that war may be the worst kind of horror, even when it’s judged against mutant cannibals.

Hatchet [DVD] [2007]

Hatchet [DVD] [2007] review

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Adam Green's Hatchet is a goofy, gory gas that pays tribute to the slasher boom of the 1980s by placing more hapless teens in the path of an indestructible maniac. Said killer is Victor Crowley (Kane Hodder, Jason in many of the later Friday the 13th entries), a deformed Louisiana swamp dweller who returns from an apparent fiery death to lay waste to a mixed bag of tourists and Mardi Gras revelers who've wandered into his turf on a "haunted swamp" tour. Hatchet doesn't exactly surpass the movies it's spoofing; Green's characters are dopey ciphers, and Crowley's indiscriminate killing spree negates his sympathetic origins. But the dialogue is glib and the performances funny (especially Parry Shen as the tour's unlikely guide and Joel David Moore as the lovelorn hero), and '80s horror aficionados will appreciate John Carl Buechler's outrageously gross effects (which get more screen time in this unrated cut). There are also cameos by genre vets Robert Englund and Tony Todd, as well as Joshua Leonard from The Blair Witch Project. -- Paul Gaita

Synopsis
The slasher film all but died with the release of Scream (1996). From that point on, the genre became populated with slick studio productions starring the latest round of teen television stars, while gore and terror all but disappeared. Hatchet director Adam green clearly longs for the early days of the VCR, when films like Madman (1982), The Burning (1981), and The Prowler (1981) gave us psycho killers with grudges, deformities, and axes to grind—usually very graphically against the heads of promiscuous teens.
Hatchet's killer is Victor Crowley, a grossly misshapen New Orleans bayou boogeyman who suffered an accidental hatchet to the face when his father tried to rescue him from a fire. When broken-hearted college boy Ben (Joel Moore) ditches his friends during a pre-Katrina Mardi Gras in favour of a cheesy Haunted Swamp tour, he finds himself on a boat full of misfits with an inexperienced tour guide (Perry Shen) just in from Detroit. Soon, the boat is sinking, and the passengers who also include an aspiring porn director and his two stars, a middle-aged couple, and a young woman with a vendetta against Crowley--come face-to-face with the monstrous killer.
Green clearly isn't against mixing humour in with his scares---Hatchet is rather liberal with laughs and has a generally light-hearted tone. But when the gore comes in, it's strong and noxious---though usually very dimly lit, this is messy stuff. He also shows his appreciation for horror film history by giving cameos to Robert Freddy Krueger England and Tony Candyman Todd and casting Kane Jason Voorhees Hodder as Crowley. Hatchet is a lively, funny, and reverent 1980’s-style gore film that is certain to get a roomful of gorehounds howling with approval.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Starting around Halloween 4, that masked nut Michael Myers stopped chasing his sister (played by Jamie Lee Curtis in the first and second films, as well as Halloween H20) and went after his niece. Now he's chasing her around again in part 5, but it's a lot of other people who die in the process. Donald Pleasence continues his mad-doctor bit from the earlier movies, Danielle Harris is the unfortunate relation, and Donald L. Shanks plays the monster. The film is an improvement on parts 2 and 4 (part 3 having nothing to do with Michael Myers), but it still amounts to routine slaughter with none of John Carpenter's stylistic brilliance from the original movie. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

Review
Halloween 5 is slightly better than Halloween 4 in the fact that we see a bit more of Micheal and we get a few more gory killing scenes like with the scissors. The movie uses some more creepy scenes like in the barn house and the Myers house, it may not look the same as the first but it's still creepy. The other scene is the car chase where Micheal is driving after Jamie with the theme music playing that always creeps me out. The Man in Black was another interesting character but sadly we don't enough of him or learn his story until Halloween 6 when his character is revealed, also that symbol that is on Micheal and the Man In Black is also revealed in part 6. A good sequel to the Halloween franchise. --imdb

fun gore, fun gags a story that was so stupid you made me laugh too the movie is just an excuse to have hot female demons young girls partying and alot of gore and cheap shocks but its what makes it great!

If you enjoy whacky over the top horror that was never meant to be serious like alot of 80s movies pick this up!

An American Haunting [DVD] [2006]

Editorial Reviews

DVD Description
Based on true events that took place in Tennessee during the 1800s, An American Haunting tells the story of the only documented case in U.S. history (validated by the State of Tennessee) in which a spirit caused a person's death. With over 20 books written on the subject, and a town that still lives in fear of the spirits' return, the story is terrifying.

Synopsis
Based on the book AN AMERICAN HAUNTING by Brent Monahan, this horror movie details a ghost story dating back to 1817 Tennessee. Inspired by manuscripts documenting the only spirit-caused death in U.S. history, the film stars accomplished actors Sissy Spacek and Donald Sutherland as the mother and father of Betsy Bell (Rachel Hurd-Wood), an adolescent girl tormented by a mysterious spirit haunting the Bell family home. The spirit is thought to have been sent by Mrs. Batts, a witchlike neighbour who--after having a bitter dispute over property rights with Betsy’s father, John Bell--put a curse on John and his daughter. Even though John Bell was the one at fault, it is his daughter who bears the heaviest burden of this spell, being thrown about her room nightly, slapped, and even sexually abused by the mystical force in question. Most of the film takes place in the home, where Betsy’s parents, a local priest, and a local schoolteacher (with whom she has a flirtatious relationship) try their best to exorcise the demon away. While the film never fully explains what the spirit is or where it came from, it does propose one disturbing theory near the end that involves the nature of young female sexuality, echoing the theme of CARRIE, which also starred Sissy Spacek. But this theme is only vaguely hinted at as the story unravels.

Torture Garden [DVD] [1967]

Torture Garden [DVD] [1967]

Dr Diablo is a showman who boasts that his special sideshow exhibit has the power to reveal to people any evil that lies in their future. But this information comes at a price...

Customer Reviews

"Yes, my friends. There is no end to man's inhumanity to man."4
Ain't dat da' truth, Ruth! While this may not be as downright creepy as a few other Amicus anthology creep-fests it is certainly not what "May West" described! I don't know which film he/she was watching, but in this film a well-disguised group of creepy sociopaths enter the Carny sideshow tent of a flagrantly creepy "Dr.Diabolo", (one of the many names for "Satan"), and following his "regular performance" they're each given the opportunity to pay for a glance into their future, (* "Diabolo" burns the cash directly after collecting it!) But it's all just a "forewarning" of the inner evil that lurks within their hearts, and souls, and minds. The evil they've all managed to keep hidden from the rest of the world, (as all sociopaths do with a lifetime of acquired skills!) So, "Diabolo" is actually giving them an opportunity to escape their fate of "torture" in his "garden" at a later date by changing their vile and pernicious ways today! And that's a very very high-minded concept. Plus, you get the brilliant "badman" Burgess, as always, adding his signature verbal underlines to each line and every word delivered, causing one to listen up and listen closely, (unless a Nimrod with A.D.D. is the one allegedly doing the listening!) Take my word for it, while "Torture Garden" may indeed be on the lighter side of Robert Bloch's gothic horror writer's bag o' tricks, it is not "RUBBISH"!!!!!! BTW: "M.A.", the "cat" wasn't the evil one, (or even the point), of that story. Nor was it the "piano" doing the dirty deed. Nor were Cushing and Palance "fighting over the works of Poe". Nor, in fact, was anything you mentioned in your "review" actually going on in the film at all! I'd say you need to "review" your intelligence level, perception abilities, and audio/visual faculties, then "re-view" it with a new mindset. But please, pay attention this time... cause the Devil is in the details!

An enjoyable divertissment.............4
An enjoyable divertissment, a classic horror episodes connected by a frame in which Dr. Diabolo (not Diablo) with hypnosis does come out of all those involved in the darkness of the soul, their piu'recondite and various incoffessate aspirazioni.Dei the best episodes are the first (a kind of reinterpretation of "The Black Cat" Poe-contaminated mixture of witchcraft), a beautiful example of psychological horror and the last one with Jack Palance and Peter Cushing against each other in parts of two manic collectors Poe whose history finira'molto evil, weak, despite what the other two jerk face of the piano in a couple of occasions.
Certainly not memorable but well directed and well staged by a famous director of photography ... nice horror anthology, even if you forget 5 minutes after "the end".

Terror and humour4
Interesting film about the devil and a group of lost souls. The brief cases are very atractive, and Burgess Meredith -as Satan- is so efective!

Sphere [DVD] [1998]

Sphere [DVD] [1998] review

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
From yet another derivative science fiction novel by Michael Crichton comes this equally derivative and flaccid movie, in which three top Hollywood stars struggle to squeeze tension and excitement out of material that doesn't match their talents. You're supposed to find awe and mystery in Crichton's story about a team of scientists and scholars who discover a 300-year-old alien spacecraft deep on the ocean floor, but mostly you feel that this is all much ado about nothing. The exploration team consists of a psychologist (Dustin Hoffman), mathematician (Samuel L. Jackson), biochemist (Sharon Stone), and an astrophysicist (Liev Schreiber), and when they enter the alien ship they discover a mysterious sphere inside. What they don't know is that the sphere has the power to manipulate their thoughts and perceptions, and before long the scientists' undersea habitat is a veritable haunted house of frightening visions and creeping paranoia. Who can be trusted? What is the sphere's purpose, and why is it on the ocean floor? Sphere makes some attempt to answer these questions, but the film is a mess, and it leads to one of the most anticlimactic endings of any science fiction film ever made. There are moments of high intensity and psychological suspense, and the stellar cast works hard to boost the talky screenplay. But it's clear that this was a hurried production (Hoffman and director Barry Levinson made Wag the Dog during an extended production delay), and as a result Sphere looks and feels like a film that wasn't quite ready for the cameras. Though it's by no means a waste of time, it's undeniably disappointing. --Jeff Shannon

But when the child Damian turns five years old, strange things begin to happen and Kate begins to notice odd things about her child, such as his strange provocation of animals and his increasingly pronounced withdrawal from her. By the time she begins fearing for her life, however, it may be too late, and it's up to her husband to figure out once and for all if the child really is the spawn of Satan. The Box [Blu-ray] [2009]

The Box [Blu-ray] [2009] review

Scott Winters, Cameron Diaz, Frank Langella, Michael Zegen, James MarsdenDirector: Richard Kelly

Synopsis
Screen siren Cameron Diaz and former X-Man James Marsden star in the supernatural horror picture The Box (2008), directed by DONNIE DARKO cult favorite Richard Kelly. The film's premise involves a strange and ominous box granted to a young couple by a mysterious stranger (Frank Langella). They are informed that pressing various buttons on the box will grant them riches while killing a person unknown to them in the process. Executive produced by Ted Hamm, the film was adapted by Kelly from Richard Matheson's 1970 short story 'Button, Button'.

Customer Reviews

Boxing Clever?3
A facially disfigured man named Arlington Steward (played by the impressive Langella) turns up at a young couple's house and offers them a choice: ignore the box he had previously delivered, or open the box with a key, hit a red button and they will receive 1,000,000 dollars tax free. The catch is that if they push the red button, someone somewhere will die. Not something that most of us will experience in our lives I would imagine.

Its all set in the seventies and as a period piece it delivers very well. The ethical maze the couple go through is interesting, but it all gets a bit confusing when the film attempts to explain Mr Steward's modus operandi (something to do with being hit by lightening and acting as an agent for some unspecified superiors), especially as there are vague but apparently meaningless references to the Viking probe's mission to Mars.

Its quite a clever story, but at the time of watching it I saw too many imperfections to completely wow me. That said, I kept thinking about it time and again over several days and that counts for a lot for a movie these days.

Buffy Seasons 1-7 DVD Box Set

Buffy the Vampire Slayer had been the creation of Joss Whedon when he first saw the movie in 1992 and thought about turning into a TV series. When it had been released first in 1997, Buffy managed to instantly grab up many loyal fans with its interesting episodes which enjoyed the appreciation of the general audience as well as critical acclaims. During its run on the television, the series managed to get nominated for Emmy's 14 times and the series managed to remain on air for seven years.

However, the show only won two Emmy's from its 14 nominations but there is no doubt about the success of the show. The long run of the series on the TV, its soaring sales of DVD boxed sets of Buffy Seasons 1-7 and its large and loyal fan base all goes to prove the fame of the series.

The lead role of Buffy is played by Sarah Michelle Gellar who is a teenage girl. Buffy is the chosen one and has the ability to stand up and fight against vampires, demons and evil spirits. During the series her friends are Xandar Harris, played by Nicholas Brendon and Willow Rosenberg, played by Alyson Hannigan. Both of her friends come to know about her special abilities and help her get closer to her mission of fighting against vampires. Buffy's watcher is Rupert Giles, played by Anthony Steward Head who is the librarian at her high school.

The first season itself has several interesting episodes where Buffy and her mother move to Sunnydale and Buffy comes to know from the librarian that the town is about to witness a powerful vampire. In the first season, her powers and abilities are revealed to her friends and the three of them then work together to fight against the Vampire. Throughout the next seasons there are several interesting episodes and weird happenings in Sunnydale where Buffy goes through a personality change and the vampires in Sunnydale plan to bring back their Master Vampire. The past of the librarian is revealed and many other problems occur in Sunnydale which Buffy must try to get rid of.

Over the last season the episodes show that the students of her school blame Buffy for not being able to protect them properly. The forces of evil are rising and Dawn and Buffy rise to the occasion to fight against them. Another character emerges through the series, Amanda who is also portrayed to be the chosen one and it is only in the last season that they come to know of her faith.

The Top Ten Horror Movies Ever Made

If you are a horror movie lover, you may want to know the top ten horror movies ever made. It is hard to compile a list of the top ten horror movies as there have been so many good ones, but these are definitely the top picks.

Hellraiser comes in at number ten. This movie is definitely a shocker and has many parts that make you jump out of your seat. This movie is definitely not for the squeamish, but if you like horror movies you will love this one.

In at number nine is The Evil Dead. Although there are some comedic parts in this movie, it is definitely a horror flick. There is a lot of decapitation and dismemberment in this movie. Again, if you have a weak stomach this may not be the best movie for you to watch. There is a lot of blood and gore and it is truly the ultimate in grossness.

At number eight is Dawn of the Dead. There is actually the original which was made in 1978 and then the remake, both which are incredible scary. The original will always be a classic and was super scary and gross.

Freddy Krueger always has to make the list on any top horror movie ranking. A Nightmare on Elm Street is pretty much the scariest Krueger movie to date and makes this list at number seven. There were a ton of sequels after this movie but as with most horror movies, the original still takes the cake. Krueger's gruesome personality and nail slashing killings make this movie gory and terrifying.

For number six it is The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Another horror flick that had a recent remake, this movie well deserves its place on the list. The ultimate in grindhouse entertainment, this flick is known by pretty well everyone by the crazy chainsaw carrying criminal living in Texas.

Sigourney Weaver made the number five movie a top pick-Alien. This movie can't get much grosser, with aliens popping out of people's stomachs. The special effects and the sets in this movie are divine and really make it worth the watch. The movie is about a crew who flies a ship and ends up having an alien come onboard. Again, there are many sequels to this movie but these sequels actually aren't all that bad. The recent Alien Vs Predator is one of the latest sequels and is definitely worth seeing.

Coming in at number four is Halloween and this movie was hard just to put at number four. It is terrifying in every sense of the word and after you watch it you will be looking around you wherever you go thinking you see Michael Myer's creepy white masked face.

The Thing is number three, and considering this thing can do anything from grow spider legs and stretch its head it is pretty obvious why it makes this list.

In second place it is Videodrome which really gives you the shivers when you watch it. Created by David Cronenberg, the genius behind Shivers, The Brood and Scanners.

Jack Nicholson makes The Shining number one, with his brilliant acting as a lunatic.

Check Out the Best Horror Films of 2009

It is kind of difficult to name the best motion pictures of all time if they come from different genres, classifications, or categories. In this regard, let's focus on one genre only. Let's focus on five of the best horror movies released in the United States in 2009.

The motion picture "25/8" is one of the best horror movies of 2009. Written by Wes Craven, "25/8" focuses on the return of a murderer to his hometown to kill children whose birthday falls on the date he almost got killed. This horror movie stars Dennis Boutsikaris, Frank Grillo, Denzel Whitaker, Shareeka Epps, and Max Thierriot.

Another film that may be considered as one of the best horror film of 2009 is "Jennifer's Body." Written by Diablo Cody, the film focuses on a possessed cheerleader who kills faculty members as well as her fellow classmates. The main character is portrayed by actress Megan Fox and a couple of performers included are Amy Sedaris and J.K. Simmons.

"Giallo" is also one of the best horror film of 2009. The story evolves on the partnership of an American stewardess with an Italian detective to rescue the former's sister who was kidnapped by a serial killer. "Giallo" is directed by Dario Argento and written by Sean Keller and Jim Agnew. The actors include Adrian Brody and Elsa Pataky.

"The Wolf Man" is a star-studded horror movie starring Benicio del Toro, Anthony Hopkins and Emily Blunt. Directed by Joe Johnston and written by Andrew Kevin Walker, other actors starring in this film include Sam Hazeldine, Kiran Shah, Geraldine Chaplin, and Hugo Weaving. Just knowing who the director, writers, and actors are, one would already know that "The Wolf Man" is considered as one of the best horror movies of all time.

With the success of the films "The Evil Dead 1" and "The Evil Dead 2," nobody will doubt the success of "Drag Me to Hell" as all these are directed by Sam Raimi. Raimi's films have always been considered as the best horror movies of all time. In "Drag Me to Hell," the story starts with a European lady who spells a curse on a young woman. Written by Sam Raimi himself with the help of his brother Ivan, the actors starring in "Drag Me to Hell" include Flor de Maria Chahua, David Paymer, Sage Stallone, Jessica Lucas, Alison Lohman, and Justin Long.

The five horror flicks mentioned are all released in 2009. Indeed, there is still a long list of the best horror movies of all time.

Amazon.co.uk Review
Night Watch is that rare film that--like The Matrix--is not only visually dazzling but creates an intriguing, seductive, and thrilling alternative world. A young man named Anton, after dabbling in black magic to bring back the wife who left him, discovers that the world is populated by fantastical Others (vampires, shape-shifters, witches, and more) who have chosen sides--Light or Dark--in an epic battle. A truce has been declared; both sides watch the other to ensure the truce is maintained. But a prophecy has predicted that a powerful Other will tilt the balance, and Anton--who is himself an Other--finds himself crucial to the prophecy's fulfillment. There's no question that Night Watch has weaknesses. Numerous plot holes get glossed over by pell-mell pacing, the visual conception of the apocalyptic battle between Light and Dark is curiously pedestrian (a bunch of knights fighting a bunch of guys in fur with swords--what happened to their various powers?), and more--but, much like similar problems with The Matrix, it doesn't matter.

The alternative world Night Watch presents is so rich with possibilities that it takes on a life of its own, both as an imaginative universe and as a vivid metaphor for the moral complexities of our own lives--for example, though the forces of Light claim to be good, their often brutal actions call their virtue into question, and the forces of Dark make some compelling moral arguments on the topic. The movie is so overstuffed with ideas that many don't get fleshed out, but that only contributes to the sense of vitality and unexplored dimensions. Even the subtitles are used creatively. The impending sequels (this is the first film of a trilogy) may--like The Matrix--take all the stimulating possibilities Night Watch raises and drag them into the toilet, but for the moment, this is the sort of electric excitement that blockbuster movies promise but so rarely deliver. --Bret Fetzer

DVD Description
For as long as humanity has existed, there have been 'Others' among us: Witches, Vampires and Shape-Shifters who are soldiers in the eternal war between Light and Dark. Light Others protect mankind from Dark Others, who plague and torture humans. For over 1000 years a truce has existed, upheld by underground forces: the soldiers of the Light (NightWatch) and the soldiers of the Dark (DayWatch). Ancient prophecy foretells that one day the Great One will arrive and end the threat of an apocalyptic battle between Light and Dark Others. That day has come, and somewhere in Moscow a Nightwatch team race to find and protect the Great One from the DayWatch vampires who seek to plunge the world into darkness. Whoever reaches the Great One first will hold the balance of power in their hands and control the fate of humanity.

Synopsis

Synopsis
In 2004, a low-budget horror film about a man who put people with moral failings into grisly, murderous situations became a huge hit. In 2005, the sequel scored again, upping the body count and the terror. In 2006, the franchise continued, with plenty of gore as well as an emotional story line that delved into the psychological makeup of the main characters. As SAW II concluded, Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) was dying. But that doesn't mean his penchant for playing games of torture and violence is ending. In SAW 3, the murders start occurring again, and Kerry (Dina Meyer) is back on the case, although she thinks this time it might be the work of a copycat. She's only partly right: Amanda (Shawnee Smith), the only victim to have survived both movies, has joined Jigsaw as his apprentice, leading the way through a terrifying game involving Lynn (Bahar Soomekh), a doctor in an unhappy marriage, and Jeff (Angus Macfadyen), a distraught man who is having trouble getting over the loss of his son (Stefan Georgiou) at the hands of a drunk driver. Amanda has captured Lynn and placed her in a neck brace that is linked to Jigsaw's heart monitor; she must keep Jigsaw alive or else the brace will explode. Meanwhile, Jeff is sent on a dangerous journey on which he faces all the people involved in the light penalty his boy's killer received--and it is up to him whether he will seek vengeance or offer forgiveness. Helmed by SAW II director Darren Lynn Bousman and written by original SAW screenwriter and star Leigh Whannell (with a story by Whannell and SAW director James Wan), SAW 3 is an intricately designed, gruesome thriller with a hard-driving soundtrack featuring songs by Slayer, Helmet, and All that Remains.

Amazon.co.uk Review
A stylish sequel though inferior to its classic predecessor, Bill Condon's Candyman 2: Farewell to the Flesh deepens our knowledge of what made the murdered Daniel Robitaille turn into the monster that haunts dreams and mirrors. But some of it is still pretty routine: schoolteacher Annie takes a long time to connect her family's plantation-owning past and her own artistic talent with the legend, and is far too ready to say the Candyman's name five times in a mirror to debunk her pupils' fears.

The setting--New Orleans in Carnival time with a disc jockey whimsically reminding us that Carnival is the last farewell to pleasure before the rigours of Lent--and the atmospheric score by Philip Glass give the film some of its class. Tony Todd, who returns as the Candyman, gives the monstrous spectre with a hook for a hand a quiet dignity and sadness which impresses. His life was torn agonisingly from him and he is mad for vengeance, yet he has an artistic temperament and loved Annie's kinswoman Caroline. Condon captures an attractive elegiac tone in much of this, as well as moments of brutal horror.

On the DVD: Candyman 2 is presented in widescreen 1.78:1; there is an attractive crispness to the picture which does real justice to the film's impressive sense of place. The music score comes across well in Dolby Digital stereo. There is a theatrical trailer, but no other features. --Roz Kaveney

"He's worth ten cents of anybody's money!"3
Despite their success with Dracula and Dr Frankenstein, Hammer never had as much luck with the Mummy despite an enjoyable first outing. The second of their Mummy trilogy, 1964's The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb, is a lot better than 1967's visibly underfunded The Mummy's Shroud, but while enjoyable enough if your expectations are low, it's over-riding atmosphere is of cosiness, akin to a Sunday afternoon Sherlock Holmes adaptation. Scripted by Henry Younger (actually Michael Carreras in a pun on Hammer producer Anthony Hinds' nom de plume John Elder), it includes all the regulars - European archaeologists incurring a curse after opening a tomb, the Words of Life, a reanimated mummy on the rampage, the girl the mummy can't bring itself to kill - and the first two thirds is all exposition, but it throws in a neat spin with Ronald Lewis' motive for bringing the mummy back to life before ending in a memorable London sewer set.

The cast isn't exactly glittering even by Hammer standards: female lead Jeanne Roland is probably best remembered, if at all, as James Bond's Japanese masseuse in You Only Live Twice, former 50s TV Sherlock Holmes Ronald (son of Leslie) Howard is a veritable Mr Excitement as her dutifully dull fiancé, George Pastell the obligatory educated Egyptian voice of doom vainly warning the profaners against taking the treasures out of the country, with only Fred Clark giving it much energy as the Barnumesque showman determined to turn a fast quarter of a million bucks by exhibiting the contents of the tomb with hourly unveilings of the Mummy himself ("He's worth 10 cents of anybody's money!") while the lower orders are represented by nervy cockney workman Harold Goodwin (you know the face, you just don't know the name) and a terrible display of eye-rolling from Hammer regular Michael Ripper as a burping Arab workman called Achmed. Perhaps more for the Hammer completist than anyone else, there's a nice use of Scope to hide the low budget and make the picture look bigger than it is that comes over well on Sony's extras-free 2.35:1 Region 2 DVD.

Show Me The Mummy4
In Egypt, at the beginning of the 20th Century, an archaeological expedition discovers the tomb of a Pharoah called Ra. The expedition's financier, an American called Alexander King, has plans to display the artefacts in a sort of travelling sideshow with the mummy as the star attraction. Unfortunately his plans hit a bit of a setback when the mummy comes back to life and starts killing people associated with the expedition....

This 1964 Hammer horror film seems to have been much-maligned over the years by some fans and critics but I don't know why because it is actually quite a good little film. Okay, so it's not as good as Hammer's 1959 film version of The Mummy and it does not have Peter Cushing or Christopher Lee in it or any other big-name actors but I still think that it is quite enjoyable and stylishly-done.

Fred Clark is great as the Barnum-type promoter, Alexander King. At one point when the police are questioning him about the strange goings on and they ask him if he has any enemies, he replies, "Of course I've got enemies, I'm in show business!" There's also an unusual twist when one of the main characters is not who he initially appears to be.

If you love Hammer films or 1960s British horror movies in general then "The Curse Of The Mummy's Tomb" is certainly worth a look.

HAMMER FILM'S MUMMY5
The Curse Of Frankenstein/Horror Of Dracula /The Mummy [1959]
This movie is actually my pappa's favourite. He had seen it during his school days. So,there was no need to coax him to buy this Hammer Horror DVD. I saw it in dad's home-theatre. I loved it. The Price of Eagypt, Ra having a cursed brother(he would never die unless by the hand of Ra), in modern America, might be a bit, far-fetched. But, come on fellas, we can allow a bit of latitude. The scenes of the 'Mummy', carrying the girl through under-ground sewers, seeking revenge on the desecrators of his tomb, are all extrmely thrilling even to this day.

Restored and uncut4
The Asphyx at last beautifully restored and available on two discs in a 2:35:1 ratio as the director had intended it to be seen. Included here is the original shortened UK version and the US longer (12 mins or so) version released in region 2 for the first time, at least that I'm aware of.
It's a tale of one of those well meaning but power-mad meddling with nature Victorian scientists who having discovered via the medium of photography what he initially believes to be the captured images of the souls of the near dead/recently expired soon realises that what he has discovered is the Asphyx, a tormented spirit that possesses the bodies of the soon to be deceased as its escape route from its own suffering. The scientist soon discovers that if he can capture and contain the asphyx before it can possess the body then that person, as long as the asphyx is prevented from entering them, would not die; the secret of immortality no less!
The Asphyx is a really quirky original british horror but it is very dialogue heavy. There is a lot of character building, back story, ethical debating, exposition etc which slow the pace somewhat and is probably best not watched unless you are fully mentally alert enough to appreciate the quite bizarre narrative, questionable behaviour and decisions and occasional illogicality of what it is laying forth.
A tale of perdition, guinea pigs both literal and metaphorical, immortality and obsession The Asphyx is well acted, has an interesting premise and manages to gloss over all the bits that don't really add up.
There are no real special effects to talk of bar the Asphyx itself which is a kind of glowing incandescent mish mash with a face of sorts, though what it lacks in visual effect it makes up for with sound by way of a nice screechy eerie noise.
There are few extras; one interesting extra is a 5 min example of the difference between the newly restored and proper ratio presentation compared to the disgraceful prior release and is more fascinating than it sounds. Other then that there is the usual trailer, photo gallery usual affair.
The Asphyx is not the greatest film but it is a good one for those who don't mind quirkyness, are quite forgiving and like occasional heavy character guided stories. Unfortunately through no fault of the other reviewers some of these reviews have been placed on this page by Amazon and are not related to this new fantastic release by Odeon Entertainment but to the earlier botched version so if you like this film don't be put off and definately buy the 2 disc Odeon entertainment version. The longer version doesn't add that much more but there is a nice additional 5 minute scene in particular with the two protagonists talking in their lab about the Asphyx which adds nicely to the overall confusion!

Classic film, lamentable DVD2
(EDIT: This review refers to the 2004 Anchor Bay DVD release of The Asphyx, NOT the 2010 release from Odeon Entertainment)

I'm in complete agreement with the other reviewer here - this disc is a travesty, and shame on the usually reliable cult-film label Anchor Bay for releasing a classic of British horror in this sort of condition! I'd come to think of Anchor Bay as a genuine film lover's label, but this was a real reputation-destroyer as far as I'm concerned and I'm now as wary of Anchor Bay discs as I am of most other labels.

The main sins here are: "The Asphyx" was shot in 2.35:1 and yet Anchor Bay's disc is presented in 1.78:1 - it's not even "halfway-house" 16x9 widescreen either, in fact they've used a pan & scan full-screen master and then further compounded the insult to both the film-makers and the viewer by cropping the top and bottom of the picture to try and make it look "widescreen". As if that wasn't bad enough to invalidate this disc (and in my opinion that's more than enough!) this version of "The Asphyx" is also the shorter of the two versions out there, running at 83 minutes instead of 99 minutes!

If you want the full-length version of "The Asphyx" in 2.35:1 on DVD then you'll have to seek out the increasingly rare R1 disc from Allday Entertainment, released way back in 1997. The fact that the full version has been released on DVD, and is therefore certainly not "lost", just makes this disc look all the more lamentable.

New Odeon release!5
The reviews here are for some reason for the previously released Anchor Bay DVD - ignore them! This new Odeon Entertainment version has been restored from the original negatives.

A disappointing DVD release of an old favourite of mine2
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS REVIEW IS BASED ON THE VIPCO DVD RELEASE OF THIS FILM.

In the 1960s and 1970s Amicus were one of the main rivals of Hammer Studios, specialising in making horror films in the `Dead Of Night' portmanteau format.

One of my favourite Amicus movies has always been this one, mainly because of its superb all-star cast. Like `Tales From The Crypt', made a year earlier, this film takes its inspiration from the old EC comics of the 1950s as well as from other Amicus productions such as `Dr Terrors House Of Horrors' and `The House That Dripped Blood'.

The set up is fairly simple: Five men congregate in an elevator but instead of stopping at each one's desired floor the elevator takes them down to a basement room where each man then tells the others their recurring nightmare...

The first story is called Midnight Mess and stars real-life brother and sister Daniel and Anna Massey. A man called Rogers tracks down his sister to a strange town and tells her that their father has died and that she will inherit everything. Unfortunately he then pulls out a switchblade knife and stabs her several times, thus ensuring that all the money will go to him instead. To celebrate his impending wealth, the evil heir-sole then goes to a local restaurant but it is no ordinary restaurant...

The second story (The Neat Job) stars the late great Terry-Thomas as a man obsessed with neatness and tidiness. When he marries a clumsy and accident-prone lady it is inevitable that it is going to end in tragedy.

The third story (This Trick'll Kill You) stars future Bond villain Curt Jurgens as an unscrupulous magician who will go to any lengths to obtain new illusions for his latest act. Whilst in India he discovers a young lady with a magic rope that can be charmed like a snake and then climbed. When the girl refuses to sell the `trick' to him he kills her but soon regrets doing this.

The fourth tale (Bargain In Death) stars Michael Craig (best known to horror fans as the sadistic prison governor in Turkey Shoot, a.k.a. Blood Camp Thatcher) as a man who plans to fake his own death and then share the insurance payout with his accomplice (Edward Judd). This story features a double double-cross and also involves a couple of over-enthusiastic medical students. The end result is very messy.

The fifth, and best, story (Drawn And Quartered) stars Tom Baker as a struggling artist living in Haiti who invests in the power of voodoo to exact revenge on people in the art world who have conned and deceived him back in England. For me this segment contains one of the most shocking scenes in the whole film when an art dealer has an unfortunate `accident' with an office guillotine. This story also features Denholm Elliott as an art collector who ends up shooting himself in the head!

At the end of the film the fate of the five main protagonists will come as no surprise to anyone who has seen Dr Terrors House Of Horrors or Tales From The Crypt but I still think that this is a satisfying conclusion.

Unfortunately, this DVD version of this entertaining film is terrible. It says `Digitally Remastered' on the DVD cover but the picture and sound quality are just awful and do not do the film any justice at all. Visually the film does not seem to be any improvement over the VHS tape version released by the same company in the early 1990s. The soundtrack is very hissy with lots of pops and glitches in it - a bit like listening to an old and scratched vinyl record. That is why I can only give this item a two star rating. This is such a pity because I really like this film and I am sure somebody somewhere can do a much better job of releasing it on DVD.

Five entertaining tales of horror and black comedy.5

A collection of tales where five men who committed evil during their lifetime spend an eternity re-telling their stories each night. Interesting stories, though two of them feature a little 'black comedy' thrown in for good measure!

Daniel and Anna Massey play side by side as brother and sister (as in real life of course) and they certainly seem to have enjoyed it! This movie has a galaxy of stars, including; Terry Alexander, Tom Baker, Michael Craig, Denholm Elliott, Glynis Johns and Terry-Thomas.

This has not been re-mastered.

A vintage chiller that delivers4
VAULT OF HORROR is the story of five men who are sent via elevator to a basement beneath the Thames in London for no apparent reason. Once there, the men begin to discuss personal nightmares they have each had and this forms the framing for the collection of scary tales that follows. The first two stories which involve a man who arrives in a dark town of vampires and a nagging husband who pays a terrible price are less than satisfactory, and both have an element of daftness to them and are more black comedy than horror. However the three stories that follow are geniuniely unsettling and save the film.In the third a devious magician trys to buy the ultimate magic trick in India , in the fourth an attempt by a would be con artist to bury himself alive backfires horrifyingly and in the final and best an artist uses black magic to gain revenge on the art dealers who have wronged him.The ending is surprising and unexpected and crowns what is a fine effort from Amicus. If you are a fan of the modern American slashers such as Scream , you will most probably give this short shrift , but if you love a good old scary piece of British horror you will not be disappointed. The ensemble cast is equally impressive , with the likes of Tom Baker , Denholm Elliot and the late Terry Thomas giving good performances. The only drawback is that the movie does look terribly dated indeed and will remind you that the seventies really was a black decade for taste. Nonetheless , totally enjoyable. If you like this keep your eyes open for FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE , which is from the same Amicus stable and is very similar in style. It does the rounds on the TCM cable channel and is just as good as this.

Beginning just moments after the end of the previous film, THE DESCENT 2 follows a rescue mission to save a group of female spelunkers who disappeared in the Appalachian Mountains. A sole survivor, Sarah (Shauna MacDonald) comes out of the caves, but a local sheriff makes her go back into the dark to aid in the search. This time around, Jon Harris, the editor of THE DESCENT, is at the helm.

Amazon.co.uk Review
Stephen King's Sleepwalkers is about a half-human, half-cat race of shape shifters called, for no apparent reason, sleepwalkers. Hunky Charles Brady (Brian Krause) and his incestuous mother (Alice Krige) are sleepwalkers, and they've come to the small town of Travis, Indiana, where they've somehow acquired a nice house and false identities. They need virgin souls to survive and have fixated on local beauty Tanya (Madchen Amick from Twin Peaks). That's about it for the story--from then on it's a series of chase scenes full of badly done gore. King must have been sleepwalking himself when he wrote this screenplay: the dialogue is terrible, the characters are cardboard, and the plotting is clumsy. Combine that with mediocre acting, thoughtless direction, slapdash editing, and cheesy special effects, and you have Sleepwalkers. Amick comes off reasonably well and there are cameos by King, Clive Barker, and horror directors John Landis (An American Werewolf in London), Joe Dante (Gremlins), and Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre). But really, if you're interested in were-cats, see the original Cat People, starring Simone Simon; it's both sexier and scarier. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com
