Unsettling and bleak horror4
An unremittingly bleak film set on a rural Irish farm where a financially desperate farmer has allowed a biogenetic research firm to conduct experiments upon his pregnant cattle with devastating results.
This film is part 'meddling with nature' and part exploration of the darker side of human nature. The acting and direction are to a very high standard; all the relationships and characters within the film hinge on either desperation or are troubled in other ways which adds an edge to the film and increases the tension for the viewer.
A very solid horror in my opinion, the budget is unimportant when the characters, story and direction are as good as this and the director/writer deserves a lot of credit for having the foresight and, lets face it, courage to present such a novel potentially disasterous idea in such an accomplished way. We need more homegrown horrors like this from the UK and Ireland, very recommended.
A great little oddity!5
It is important to note that this is an independant horror film and that therefore the budget is not gargantuan. As a result of this, the use of lighting, shadows, gruesome anamatronics, as well as strong performances from a great cast are used to great effect in order to make up for it. The setting of the film (a grimy farm) is probably the most significant character of all though, as it provides a bleak and believable backdrop to the story.
The story itself sounds (on paper) extremely silly. However, due to the great artistic flare of the aforementioned film features, the end result is a terryfiying experience in the vein of the original "Alien". Probably its greatest feature though, is the originality of the storyline (mutant cow foetus).
I highly reccomend that you take an hour and a half of your life to watch this largely unnoticed creature feature. Just not alone.
a surprising good find4
Awesome film!! its presentation is dripping with bleakness desolation and dread. set on a grim irish farm several people find themselves at the mercy of a bio-genetic calf creature. stylistically it reminded me very much of alien 3, with lots of bleached out greys and browns, how ever this only serves to re-inforce the bleakness of these peoples struggle to survive. the film has some very solid acting and some very inventive moments of tension, (tractor in swill tank). this film left me with cold feeling in my heart, sometHing which alot of horrors/creature features have been unable to do.
i recommend watching on ur own with the sound right up. the only minus i felt let the film down was the final monster reveal, courageously the makers went with an animatronic creature, so theres no sloppy cgi here.
but all in all a gem of a horror film.
