Amazon.co.uk Review
Boasting an upgrade in production values, The Hills Have Eyes should please new-generation horror fans without offending devotees of Wes Craven's original version from 1977. There's still something to be said for the gritty shock value of Craven's low-budget original, made at a time when horror had been relegated to the pop-cultural ghetto, mostly below the radar of major Hollywood studios. With the box-office resurgence of horror in the new millennium--and the genre's lucrative popularity among the all-important teen demographic--it's only fitting that French director Alexandre Aja should follow up his international hit High Tension with a similarly brutal American debut to boost his Hollywood street-cred. Working with cowriter Gregory Levasseur, Aja remains surprisingly faithful to Craven's original, beginning with a bickering family that crashes their truck and trailer in the remote desert of New Mexico (actually filmed in Morocco), where they are subsequently terrorized, brutalized, and murdered by a freakish family of psychopaths, mutated by the lingering radiation from 331 nuclear bomb tests that were carried out during the 1950s and '60s. After several killings are carried out in memorably grisly fashion, it's left to the survivors to outsmart their disfigured tormentors, who are blessed with horrendous make-up (especially Robert Joy as freak leader "Lizard") but never quite as unsettling as the original film's horror icon, Michael Berryman. In Aja's hands, this newfangled Hills is all about savagery and de-evolution, reducing its characters to a state of pure, retaliatory terror. It's hardly satisfying in terms of storytelling (since there's hardly any story to tell), but as an exercise in sheer malevolence, it's undeniably effective.-- Jeff Shannon

Synopsis
With his 2006 remake of Wes Craven's 1977 slasher 'The Hills Have Eyes', French director Alexandre Aja manages to accomplish what many directors fail to do by making his film a definite improvement over the original. With Craven on board as producer, Aja sticks pretty closely to the first film's script and storyline, but with the help of a larger budget, special effects, better actors, and slick cinematography, creates a much scarier story. While the film's setting is contemporary, it maintains a 1970s feel in parts, paying tribute to the decade in which the slasher subgenre was born. With an interesting opening-credit sequence consisting of actual nuclear testing footage, we are told that the film's desert setting was the site of nuclear testing during the 1950s and '60s. Warned to vacate, the miners that lived there refused to leave, thus subjecting themselves to high levels of toxic radiation, and breeding mutant babies as a result. It is this generation of now-grown mutants that the poor Carter family has the misfortune to encounter while driving through New Mexico on their way to California. When their vehicle breaks down in the desert, the Carters are too busy bickering with one another to realise they have entered enemy territory. But it doesn't take long for the demented creatures living in the hills to make their presence known. The gore fest that follows is packed with terribly frightening scenes of the deformed killers delighting in the torment and intended kill of each family member, young mothers, teen girls, and babies included. Much of the film is set in a government-created test city in which deteriorating mannequins take the place of actual humans. Posing lifelessly alongside their mutant neighbours, these waxy figures provide a chilling backdrop for the graphic war between the mutants and their victims.

Amazon.co.uk Review
Yep, that ugly toy with the killer's instinct is back for a fifth round of irreverent bloodshed in Seed of Chucky. Chucky and his plastic partner Tiffany are reanimated by their child, a gentle doll of indeterminate gender who'd prefer that his parents stopped their knife-wielding ways. No such luck. In an attempt at irony that also includes John Waters as a tabloid reporter, Jennifer Tilly (who also voices Tiffany) is asked to play herself, a B-grade actress tired of being stuck in a movie filled with murderous dolls. She courts rap star Redman, playing himself, when she hears he's looking for someone to play the mother of Jesus in a new film. Chuck, Tiffany, and spawn naturally interrupt such ridiculous plans. Writer/director Don Mancini has the trio doing things you have to see to believe, including a vivid disembowelment and a human impregnation featuring a turkey baster filled with, you guessed it, the seed of Chucky. It's junk, sure, and tension-free, but Tilly's willing self-debasement is fairly jaw-dropping. If you're so inclined, her shameless decision to play along may be reason enough to suffer the consequences. --Steve Wiecking, Amazon.com

Synopsis
Everyone's favourite plastic slasher doll, Chucky (voiced by Brad Dourif), returns for a fifth instalment of this popular horror series. Apparently Chucky and his equally murderous bride, Tiffany (voiced by Jennifer Tilly), had a child, which has grown up in a cage as part of a heavy-metal ventriloquist act in England. Eventually it (one never learns its exact gender) escapes to Los Angeles to revive mom and pop, whose doll corpses are being used for a movie based on their previous killing spree. Jennifer Tilly shows up as herself, and she's great--hamming it up as a floozy actress so desperate for the part in rapper Redman's latest film that she lures him home for a casting couch tryst, with hilarious (and fatal) results. Meanwhile, the child of Chucky is horrified by the violent murders its parents are so fond of committing and, with a little help from a 12-step book, tries to help them kick the homicide habit. Of course it's hard when there are so many deserving targets around, including John Waters as a scuzzy paparazzi. In sum, this is one crazy sequel; it's got a refreshing lack of morals, a light heart, and a clever script with a lot of great insider jokes for buffs. The gore is extreme though, including eviscerations, beheadings, melting flesh, and other raunchy business that makes its R rating well-earned (no true Chucky fan would have it any other way, of course). Rappers Eminem and Big Pun contributed tracks to the score.

Amazon.co.uk Review
If you're after something a bit more magical than the current crop of gory, torturous horror movies, this Guillermo del Toro Collection might be just what you're looking for. Del Toro weaves together dark fairy tales with bleak reality in each of these three movies, creating films which are clever, beautiful and incredibly haunting. Although del Toro has made more high profile movies--Hellboy and Blade 2, specifically--his Spanish language movies are clearly his real passion. More personal than his superhero movies, each of these films has something to say.

The earliest of the movies is Cronos. Released in 1993, it's a story of family loyalties as well as alchemy and vampirism. 2001's The Devil's Backbone sees a group of orphans battling for survival in a world populated by bullies and ghosts, with war torn Spain providing a stunning background; while Pan's Labyrinth, released in 2006 to critical acclaim, mingles real life politics and social drama with fantasy and magic to create a masterpiece. Pan's Labyrinth won three Oscars, though it also deserved the other three it was also nominated for.

With each successive film, Del Toro's filmmaking has grown ever more mature and powerful, and this boxset perfectly showcases an incredible talent.--Sarah Dobbs

Synopsis
Mexican director Guillermo Del Toro is recognised as one of the world's most visually creative filmmakers, balancing a career torn between blockbusters such as HELLBOY and BLADE II with smaller, personal projects such as the three films brought together in this collection – THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE, PAN'S LABYRINTH and his debut feature, CRONOS.

Tormented [DVD]

Tormented [DVD] [2009]
Directed by Jon Wright

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Taking a tabloid hot potato--school bullying--and turning it into an effective and very British horror film, Tormented begins as the pupils of a suitably homogenous school gather at the funeral for one of their classmates, Darren Mullet. It quickly transpires that not many people knew him, and very few liked him, with even Tuppence Middleton’s head girl having to say words at his funeral when she seemingly barely had a nice word to say about him in real life. Post-funeral, everyone soon goes back to business as usual, with a party on the agenda. But then the chills start coming, as mobile phones start ringing, and the calls seem to be coming from the supposedly-deceased Mullet.

It’s a simple premise, and one that allows the script of Tormented to make one or two points about bullying, before getting down to its main business of being a better-than-expected teen horror movie. This is the kind of thing that generally American filmmakers have done best over the years, but thanks to a surprisingly strong teen cast, it turns out the film makers of Britain are more than up to the challenge, too.

Writer Stephen Prentice and director Jon Wright wisely take their time sliding the pieces of Tormented into place, establishing their characters and generally initiating in most cases plenty of reason why they should meet their maker. Director Wright then proves he’s an able student of the genre by framing some well-managed jumps, and while the ending is telegraphed some distance away, Tormented is an effective and really rather good little horror movie. Much better than you’re probably expecting, too… --Simon Brew

Synopsis
The best days of your life become your worst nightmare in Tormented, a high school comedy with a very sinister twist. At the exclusive Fairview High grammar school all is not what it seems, although you wouldn't tell from its seemingly normal veneer. With a budding romance between head girl Justine Fielding (Tuppence Middleton) and popular hunk Alexis (Dimitri Leonidas) blossoming for the whole school to see, a sinister undercurrent begins to sweep through the halls. Alexis is a part of a group of friends headed by Bradley (Alex Pettyfer); a clique who victimise the weaker kids for sadistic pleasure. One such victim was poor Darren Mullett (Calvin Dean) bullied so badly during the previous summer, he took his own life in order to escape their diabolical onslaught. Now, with a newfound confidence and absolutely nothing left to lose, Darren is back from the dead to take his revenge in the most bloody and inventive ways.

Synopsis
Director Gregory Dark's contemporary B-movie gorefest has all the necessary trappings to leave genre fans satisfied, and others slightly nauseous. The scene is set when a group of juvenile delinquents arrive at a roach-infested ruin of a hotel, where they have agreed to work in exchange for lighter sentences. They are led by a cop who lost his hand four years ago in a struggle with a brutal serial killer whom he killed with a bullet to the head--or so he thought. Now, the very same hulking monster, played by WWE wrestler Kane, haunts the halls of the dilapidated hotel, and with no further ado begins picking off the teenagers one by one. He metes out his own brand of justice: having been taught as a child by his punishingly Christian mother that the eyes--the windows to the soul--must be cleaned to please God, he gouges out the eyes of each of his victims. The camera does not shy away from this or any other terifically squirm-inducing action, while the hyperkinetic editing maintains a head-spinning pace. The characters remain one-dimensional and stereotypical, true to teen slasher tradition, but there are enough twists and gleeful scares to make it well worth the while.

Amazon.co.uk Review
The only real problem with Stir of Echoes has nothing to do with the movie itself, but with unlucky coincidence. Adapted from a Richard Matheson novel, this film arrived around the same time as The Sixth Sense. Surface similarities made it suffer by cursory comparison and the competing film's phenomenal success. It's a pity, because this one features one of Kevin Bacon's best performances, in a psychological thriller that makes a lot more right moves than wrong ones.

Bacon plays a blue-collar guy who laments his ordinary life, only to learn, when his sister-in-law (Ileanna Douglas) hypnotizes him, that he is a "receiver" capable of seeing spirits and split-second glimpses of past and future events. It's a torturous gift to have--especially since his friendly Chicago neighbourhood possesses a dark secret--and Bacon plays the role with an appropriate mixture of obsession and internalised torment. Similarity to The Sixth Sense applies only to the basic premise and the character of Bacon's young son. Otherwise, this is more of a hard-edged journey of self-discovery, marital crisis, and recovery, with Bacon's wife (played by the highly underrated Kathryn Erbe) involved in an underdeveloped sub-plot about a group of people who share Bacon's gift as paranormal "receivers". Furthering his career as a writer-director of intelligent thrillers, David Koepp makes a few mis-steps in pacing and thematic overkill, but overall Stir of Echoes is a sharp, sensitive thriller that unfolds to reveal a dramatically satisfying solution to its mystery. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

Synopsis
Chicago telephone lineman Tom Witzkey (Kevin Bacon) is hypnotized at a party by his sister-in-law (Illeana Douglas) and begins seeing the ghost of a neighborhood girl murdered years before. Now in possession of knowledge he never wanted to know, Tom struggles through his daily existence plagued by these newly-acquired supernatural visions while attempting to retain his sanity.

Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2 Disc) [DVD] [2007]
Directed by Tim Burton

Amazon.co.uk Review
After years of rumours, it turns out that Tim Burton was the perfect visionary to film Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Stephen Sondheim's Broadway masterpiece, and the result is a macabre and moving musical movie as enthralling as anything Burton has ever done. The show's mix of gothic horror, Grand Guignol, very dark humor, and witty and beautiful music never was the stuff of traditional musical comedy, but it's a powerful work, and perhaps the richest of the late 20th century. In the movie, Burton's frequent collaborator, Johnny Depp, plays Todd, a wronged man whose lust for revenge drives him to murder (an 19th-century legend who has been traced to a real-life barber). Helena Bonham Carter, another Burton mainstay, is Mrs. Lovett, the barber's partner-in-unspeakable-crime. It's no surprise that Depp is an excellent choice to convey Todd's brooding intensity and volcanic rage, but he can also sing a score that is so challenging it has often played in opera houses (though not with the same style as the Broadway original, Len Cariou, and he occasionally lapses into pop style). Bonham Carter is small of voice and lacks the humour of the original Broadway Lovett, Angela Lansbury, but she sings on pitch, in rhythm, and in character at the same time, which is no small feat for a Sondheim show. Aficionados will regret the loss of certain musical passages--"The Ballad of Sweeney Todd" is just an instrumental overture and the chorus is gone altogether, among others, but the reassuring presence of orchestrator Jonathan Tunick and conductor Paul Gemignani ensures that the music feels right and sounds great. And the film's depiction of a Victorian London hellhole, with cinematography by Dariusz Wolski and costumes by Colleen Atwood, also looks and feels right.

The excellent cast is filled out by Alan Rickman as the villainous Judge Turpin, Timothy Spall as his seedy Beadle, Sacha Baron Cohen as a rival barber, Jamie Campbell Bower as the young lover Anthony, Jayne Wisener as his object of affection, and Ed Sanders as the young Toby. For fans of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp who don't think they like musicals, Sweeney Todd should be a revelation (though not for the squeamish, as the gore is intense and completely appropriate). For fans of Broadway and Sondheim, it's hard to imagine getting a better adaptation than this. The fact that there's no newly composed Oscar-bait song sung by a Josh Groban-type over the end credits only makes it better. --David Horiuchi

Opening with spectacular aerial shots of a beautiful, mountainous landscape, Stanley Kubrick's horror classic THE SHINING, based on Stephen King's best-selling novel, sucks the viewer into his frightening tale with quiet, relaxing visuals - but the ominous soundtrack warns that all is not right at the gorgeous Overlook Hotel. Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson at his eyebrow-raising best), a Vermont schoolteacher, accepts a job as the winter caretaker of the glorious early-20th-century resort that operates only in warm weather because the snowy roads deny access in the colder months. Jack brings his wife, Wendy (Shelley Duvall), with him, as well as his young son, Danny (Danny Lloyd)--who brings with him a little boy named Tony who lives in his mouth. As the Torrances settle in for the long, lonely months ahead, strange, unexplainable things start occurring in the hotel--and in every scene Jack seems to be growing a little more evil and dangerous...
With superb camerawork (the Steadicam follows the evil through narrow hallways and ornate rooms), extraordinary sound detail (the scene in which Danny rides his Big Wheel across the Overlook's hardwood and carpeted floors is an aural classic), and a terrifying score (based on the work of Bela Bartok), THE SHINING is an unforgettable masterpiece, a psychological supernatural thriller featuring outstanding performances from Nicholson and Duvall--and a cast of dead twin girls and suicid

Sci Fi Horror - 4 Dark Sci Fi Movies on Blu Ray

As you're all most likely aware, Blu Ray is here to stay thanks largely to Wal-Mart deciding to carry it and not HD-DVD. As we begin to make the switch from DVD to Blu Ray, many of us want to be able to get our same favorite movies in the new format that we enjoyed on DVD. Today I'd like to offer up five titles from the Sci Fi Horror genre, some darker than others, but all available right now to fans!

Dark City - This movie's a real showcase of style. It's got the darkly moody feel of a comic book in which the hero's not quite so heroic from time to time. A ton of sets were used to create this movie and it boasts mind-boggling set design that draws from the German expressionism art movement. The director, Alex Proyas, happens to be the guy who brought us both I, Robot and The Crow. If you've seen those films then you know what a visionary he is. The cast includes Jennifer Connelly, Rufus Sewell, Kiefer Sutherland and William Hurt. A film of this kind with such a rich world benefits from the Blu Ray format because it allows the filmmakers to bring us much more footage than they originally were able to. Dark City looks like a must own for those who like their Sci Fi dark and twisted!

Cloverfield - If you went to the movies at all during the last half of 2007 then you no doubt saw the trailers for Cloverfield. It's been described as Blair Witch Project meets Godzilla and I'd say that's not too far off the mark. Basically the entire movie's shot from the perspective of a camcorder and focuses on a group of young adults from Manhattan. If you love monsters then you'll love this film because more than any other sci fi horror movie of recent years, it makes it all feel real and believable. The cast includes Michael David-Stahl, Mike Vogel, TJ Miller and Odette Yustman. While the movie's not terribly long (a little over 80 minutes), it's certainly a fun one to pop in while hanging out with friends because who doesn't love a good giant monster flick?

Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem - Unless you've been living on the moon for the past decade, chances are good that you've heard of the Aliens vs Predator rivalry which pulls together two of those most viscious extra terrestrials ever to grace the silver screen. While quite a few fans weren't hot on the 2004 movie of this rivalry due to its lack of firearms and gruesome goodness, the series came back with Requiem and it provides everything even the hardcore fans really wanted to see. This installment happens before the original Alien movies and sees the Predator's ship smash into a little town in Colorado. The work of dark sci fi master H.R. Giger shines alongside the visual effects work of The Strause Brothers, a team known for making music videos. You'll not only get to see those aliens and the Predator warrior, you'll also meet a hybrid of both species that fans know as the Predalien. It's a sure bet for solid entertainment of horror meets sci fi!

Blade Runner 25th Anniversary Edition - And now for the mother of all dark sci fi flicks, the highly celebrated and deeply innovative film known as Blade Runner! If you can believe it, it's been a quarter century since Ridley Scott brought us this cinematic masterpiece. He went back into post production specifically to get this film ready for its anniversary release. You'll see stars like Daryl Hannah, Edward James Olmos, Joanna Cassidy, Sean Young, Rutger Hauer and of course, the one and only Harrison Ford, along with several other stars from both in front of and behind the camera in bonus features galore. All footage has been restored, new scenes have been added or lengthened, special effects have been improved and the sounds in the sparkly new 5.1 Dolby Digital audio. In total there are a whopping 5 disks of material that'll please even the most hardcore fans so if you're into Blade Runner this one's a definite must have.

So that's my look at four dark sci fi films now available on Blu Ray. I hope you've enjoyed this look at the movies and that you've found something to add to your own collection. Thanks for reading!

Unsettling and bleak horror4
An unremittingly bleak film set on a rural Irish farm where a financially desperate farmer has allowed a biogenetic research firm to conduct experiments upon his pregnant cattle with devastating results.
This film is part 'meddling with nature' and part exploration of the darker side of human nature. The acting and direction are to a very high standard; all the relationships and characters within the film hinge on either desperation or are troubled in other ways which adds an edge to the film and increases the tension for the viewer.
A very solid horror in my opinion, the budget is unimportant when the characters, story and direction are as good as this and the director/writer deserves a lot of credit for having the foresight and, lets face it, courage to present such a novel potentially disasterous idea in such an accomplished way. We need more homegrown horrors like this from the UK and Ireland, very recommended.

A great little oddity!5
It is important to note that this is an independant horror film and that therefore the budget is not gargantuan. As a result of this, the use of lighting, shadows, gruesome anamatronics, as well as strong performances from a great cast are used to great effect in order to make up for it. The setting of the film (a grimy farm) is probably the most significant character of all though, as it provides a bleak and believable backdrop to the story.
The story itself sounds (on paper) extremely silly. However, due to the great artistic flare of the aforementioned film features, the end result is a terryfiying experience in the vein of the original "Alien". Probably its greatest feature though, is the originality of the storyline (mutant cow foetus).
I highly reccomend that you take an hour and a half of your life to watch this largely unnoticed creature feature. Just not alone.

a surprising good find4
Awesome film!! its presentation is dripping with bleakness desolation and dread. set on a grim irish farm several people find themselves at the mercy of a bio-genetic calf creature. stylistically it reminded me very much of alien 3, with lots of bleached out greys and browns, how ever this only serves to re-inforce the bleakness of these peoples struggle to survive. the film has some very solid acting and some very inventive moments of tension, (tractor in swill tank). this film left me with cold feeling in my heart, sometHing which alot of horrors/creature features have been unable to do.

i recommend watching on ur own with the sound right up. the only minus i felt let the film down was the final monster reveal, courageously the makers went with an animatronic creature, so theres no sloppy cgi here.

but all in all a gem of a horror film.

Synopsis
High-concept Spanish horror film REC employs the same 'amateur' handheld camera technique as THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT and, more recently, CLOVERFIELD, to create a heightened sense of realism and terror. Local TV reporter Angela (Manuela Velasco) and her cameraman are covering the night shift at a Barcelona fire station when they are called out to help an old woman trapped in her apartment. This routine call is soon revealed to be anything but, when events take a horrific turn. After breaking down the door, the team find the woman seemingly possessed and rabidly aggressive. As it becomes clear that the danger is not merely confined to the woman's apartment, Angela, her cameraman and those unfortunate to be trapped inside the dark building find themselves desperately scrambling to escape, despite outside efforts to contain them.
The film is co-directed by Jaume Balaguero (DARKNESS) and Paco Plaza, who also share writing credits with Luis Berdejo. The hyper-realism of the teams' script and frenzied direction ensure that the viewer is on edge throughout, with dread lurking down every hallway and around every corner. A huge cult hit in its native country, REC has already spawned an American remake, QUARANTINE (2008) and received much-deserved widespread critical acclaim.
